BS 7858 Employee Screening for UK Employers

Screening to BS 7858:2019, the British Standard code of practice for screening people who work in a secure environment. We check identity, right to work, five years of history, financial background and criminal record, and give you a complete screening file for every candidate. From £70 per candidate.

What Our BS 7858 Screening Includes

Every check needed for a complete BS 7858 screening file, carried out and chased by our team so your managers don't have to.

1. Identity and Address

We confirm each candidate's identity, date of birth and current address using the documents they provide.

Proof of identity, date of birth and address is recorded on the candidate's screening file.

2. Right to Work

We check and record evidence that each candidate has the right to work in the UK.

The right to work evidence is held on the screening file alongside the other checks.

3. Five-Year History

We verify employment, education and any other activity over the last five years, or since the candidate left compulsory education if that is shorter.

References are requested from previous employers, and any gaps in the history are followed up and accounted for, using HMRC employment history records where needed.

4. Financial Checks

A financial check identifies county court judgments, bankruptcies, insolvencies and individual voluntary arrangements.

The results are recorded so you can make an informed decision about the candidate's suitability for the role.

5. Criminal Record and Watchlist

For non-SIA roles we arrange a Basic DBS check. For SIA licence holders we check their licence on the SIA register instead.

Every candidate is also checked against global watchlists, and their public social media is reviewed.

£70 per candidate for SIA licence holders. £99 per candidate for non-SIA roles, including the Basic DBS check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BS 7858? BS 7858:2019 is the British Standard code of practice for screening people employed in a secure environment. It sets out the checks an employer should complete before and during employment.

How much does it cost? £70 per candidate for SIA licence holders, and £99 per candidate for non-SIA roles, which includes a Basic DBS check.

How long does screening take? Typically 10 to 15 working days, depending on how quickly candidates and referees respond. We chase outstanding information every three days.

Why don’t SIA licence holders need a DBS check? The SIA carries out a criminal record check as part of its licensing process, so for licence holders we check their licence on the SIA register instead.

Can a candidate start before screening is complete? In limited circumstances BS 7858 allows this once certain initial checks are done, with restrictions in place until screening is finished. We can advise on what applies to your roles.
